Stayed at the Hampton Inn last night. Tim had to complain about his river view room. The window faced the river alright, but was blocked by the entrance portico. Some people will complain about anything.
Went downtown and had dinner at Bowie's Tavern. Ordered a few pizzas which were probably the worst pizzas you would ever have. Ordered four different types and they all tasted the same. Some were smart enough to order Philly Cheese Steaks or Buffalo Wings. The atmosphere was good though.
Up about 6.30 am. Don't know how we do it. Such tough men, aren't we? After breakfast in the hotels breakfast room, we wouldn't let Ronnie have a Cracker Barrel breakfast, we headed off around town for some sightseeing and visited Longwood, the largest octagonal house in the United States.
As we were driving around, Ronnie asked if we wanted an ice-cream sundae and pulled into the DQ Grill and Chilli drive through. He thought the DQ stood for Dairy Queen. Save to say, we didn't get our sundae. Ronnie.
After that, we drove to Clarksdale via the Windsor ruins, Port Gibson and Vicksburg. We had lunch at the Sonic Drive Thru. Not a pretty sight, 11 blokes trying to order meals through a speaker box. Poor Mal missed out on his because someone else ate it. Here's a few photographs of what we did and saw:-
This is Longwood:-
Route 61, or the Great River Road:-
The Windsor ruins. Was one of the only houses not destroyed during the Civil War, but was accidently destroyed by fire shortly thereafter:-
The spire of the Port Gibson First Presbyterian Church pointing to the road to redemtion:-
The Sonic Drive Thru:-
And finally, Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Club. Great atmosphere, but when we saw it, we wondered what the hell the accommodation above it would be like. We could hear Tim's mind ticking over thinking of where the nearest decent hotel would be. Turned out the accommodation was very good compared to the club. Check it out:-
We're off to Memphis tomorrow. We'll check out all the McDonald's stores on the way to see if Elvis is working at any of them.
Regards,
The DMTC
